Originators of Smart Lighting Control
As inventors of the original dimmer switch, Lutron has been at the forefront of lighting innovation for over 50 years, and they are now the undisputed market leaders in smart lighting. But what are the benefits of installing a smart lighting solution versus an off-the-shelf product offered by the likes of Amazon, John Lewis or your local Electrical wholesaler? They’re just light bulbs, right?
Wrong! There are several reasons why we advocate a professional smart lighting solution rather than individual cheaper products. And there are good reasons why we recommend Lutron, the lighting experts. Here we discuss both:
1. Creating Ambience and Mood Lighting
A smart lighting system allows you to create the perfect atmosphere in your home with several pre-set lighting scenes for different rooms, different moods, and different times of the day and year. You could have a dinner party scene, where the lights show off your property in it’s best possible light (if you excuse the pun). Or a winter breakfast scene, where you ease the family into the morning. You can set individual lights to be brighter than others, such as the light above the cooker or dressing table. And other lights might be set to dim automatically – when you settle down to watch TV in the evening, for example. Any solution can be pre-set, which means you don’t have to continually go into each room adjusting dimmer switches.
2. Control and Security
There’s nothing worse than getting into bed and realising you’ve left the lights on in the lounge. With a Lutron system, you can turn all lights off from the comfort of your bed. And crucially, back on again if you hear a disturbance. You can schedule your exterior lights to turn on when you arrive home, and then your interior lights to illuminate the house as you enter. Your lights can automatically turn off as you leave the room, and when you’re leaving the house, you can turn them all off at the push of one button.
Being able to control your lights from anywhere in the world is an excellent addition to the security of your home. You can switch them on and off at different times of the day to make it look like someone is in, while you’re away. (You can also pre-set this to happen before you leave). And you can connect your lighting to a security system, programming them to flash if there is a disturbance, and alerting people to a problem.
No one wants to find themselves unable to turn their lights on, but smart lighting needs to be connected to the Internet to work. It’s therefore essential your lights are not at the mercy of your broadband connection (which most of the off-the-shelf solutions are), and it also needs to be protected from Internet malware. Lutron lighting is connected locally, meaning the lights will always turn on and off within the property, as well as being connected to the internet so you can control them when you’re not at home. Lutron also keeps their solutions well maintained from an Internet security perspective by updating their software regularly, and their on-going customer support is second to none.
4. Best In Class Design
The Lutron control panels are as stylish as they are functional. They are designed to be as unassuming as possible while having several hidden controls behind a simple keypad. The keypad can either be hardwired into the wall (Palladiom or See Touch Style) or can be wireless and moveable (RA2 Select Pico Style). Either way, they are sleek, well designed and come in a range of colours and finishes.
