Why you should invest in Control 4 for your video door entry solution
Video door entry is fast becoming the new must-have smart home solution, and we’re seeing several new products coming to market as a result. Well-established off-the-shelf solutions, such as Ring and Nest, have played their part in the adoption of this technology, and it’s obvious why. For less than £200 you can see, and communicate with, whoever is at your front door from anywhere in the world. What’s not to love?
Unfortunately, there are usually drawbacks with these cheaper solutions:
1. Hidden Costs & Ugly Boxes.
While off-the-shelf packages can appear to be relatively ‘cheap’, they do come with hidden costs. In most cases, you will need to employ an electrician to connect your device to power, which usually means hooking up to an existing wired doorbell and chime. If you don’t have one or have a Bluetooth enabled doorbell, then you will need to break into your walls in order to get power to the doorbell.
Secondly, these are US products and need 16 to 24 voltage, but most UK doorbells are only 8 volts. Therefore, you will need to buy and fit a transformer, which needs to be housed inside an ugly adaptable box that’s twice the height of an iPhone. Not great if it’s the ‘clean lines’ look you’re going for.
Both Nest and Ring also require a cloud subscription for the recordings your doorbell makes. These can equate to around £80 a year, and if you add a similar video camera to supplement your doorbell, then there is another £80 charge per year. Very quickly these devices can become passively expensive.
2. It’s a Wireless Solution.
These cheaper solutions connect to your Wi-Fi, so if your Wi-Fi goes down or suffers a poor-quality connection, so does your doorbell. Suddenly the price of your doorbell has escalated once again as you need to install good Wi-Fi close by.
Worse though, there are pieces of equipment available online that can block your Wi-Fi signal altogether. Potential burglars can disable your camera and doorbell from afar, carry out their crime, then switch the Wi-Fi back on, leaving you with no footage of the incident.
Why Control 4 is worth the investment.
So, in a rapidly evolving market, why would we choose to stand behind one particular product?
The Control 4 solution is, quite simply, the best video door-bell solution around. It hard-wires to your router, so you’re not reliant on your Wi-Fi connection. This means no security issues and no degradation of quality. It’s also powered by the ethernet cable, so there’s no need to connect to an existing doorbell or install an ugly transformer.
The product itself is very sophisticated. It can connect to the audio zones throughout your home, so if you’re working in the garage, or perhaps you’re a little hard of hearing, your doorbell can be heard in every room, without having to buy extra units (which is another hidden cost of the cheaper solutions). You can also install in-wall keypads in every room, which means you don’t need to have your phone with you, to see or communicate with the person at the door.
Finally, a Control 4 solution can connect to the front door lock and lighting, meaning you can remotely turn the lights on, and let someone in. Equally, you can lock the doors and turn on security lights if you think you have an unsavoury character at the door.
Apart from these great features, Control 4 is a reliable, well-established home automation company, and has integration at the very core of their product offering. We have great faith and trust in their products and their after-sales care.
